Over this course, I have learned many things from the course content and a lot about the job I want to do, social media marketing. Although I had already had experience with editing videos and images, I have learned more about them throughout this course and the available tools. I got the opportunity to use Adobe Audition, Photoshop, and Premiere, which I believe helped me better understand the process of editing in many forms. I had experienced editing photos for Instagram, but this class showed me how to edit them in a more professional light. I also had edited videos for fun, but I have learned how to make an informational video rather than a bunch of videos to music.
I gained more than I even expected to gain throughout writing my blogs as well, especially with social media. I decided to base most of my work on social media since it is something I would like to do in the future, and it helped me learn more about myself and be able to share my experience with others, which could help them while using social media. I wrote about how social media shaped my life, the political side of social media, and what to know before starting social media. When I wrote about myself, it was interesting to see just how big of a role social media played in my life and who I am. For my blog on the political divide in social media, I got to share my opinions on the matter and share how someone could work to avoid issues with politics in social media. Lastly, I share four important things to know before joining social media for my final blog. Some of the ideas I used from personal experience, and others I used resources to help guide people as well.
Another thing that I used my knowledge of social media to complete was my Podcast. For my Podcast, I talked about making social media a happier place for you, and I interviewed my roommate from boarding school to share her personal journey with social media. I have never had a very negative experience with social media, so I thought that it was important to show people how I accomplished it so they could hopefully make social media a happier place for them.
In this course, we also completed ethics forums that had to deal with social media. One of the forums dealt with Facebook and how they keep the algorithm that leads to misinformation and causes issues with people’s mental health even though they know these issues exist. This was interesting for me to read because I understood just how little these social media industries care about their consumers. This allowed me to share more in my final blog about how to start social media and how someone can get on top of the algorithm by looking at things that would benefit them rather than cause them damage.
I think that it is very important to understand the ethics of content consumption and creation because it will help us better ourselves on social media and know what to look out for/avoid. Social media can be a tricky thing to navigate, and if you do not know much about you could end yourself in a bad situation and cause damage to your well-being as well as others. Throughout the course, I have educated myself more on content consumption and creation, and I hope to use that to help me navigate social media in my personal life as well as for my job.
